What's Next?

Have you ever had a big moment in life that you planned your whole life for come to past? Or planned for a certain kind of future only to find it is no longer possible? What do we do in these moments? Moments that leave us asking, “What’s next?” This question often leads to us creating ever expanding goal post, we never seem to reach. This can lead to a very dissatisfying life and have us grow bitter to the world around us.

I believe Christ offers us a very interesting antidote to this question that can lead to us letting go of this question all together and living a life lost in the BEAUTY OF THE PRESENT. We discover this in the Gospel according to Matthew 6:25-34……

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendour was dressed like one of these.  If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Now this scripture points to the fact that we as Jesus followers believe in a God who is Omni-Loving and provides for all creation. If we truly believe this, we do not hold onto things with a clinched fist, rather we hold things loosely. Knowing God will provide, and it is our job to seek God’s kingdom where Divine Love flows and reign around us. When we live this way, we do not worry about, “What’s next?” and instead get lost in the BEAUTY OF THE PRESENT. Knowing there will be enough and there is so much beauty happening right in front of us. This allows us to lose sight of the ever-expanding goal post, that only lead to a life full of dissatisfaction.

Don’t get me wrong having goals in life is vital but we cannot let this stop us from seeing the beauty right in front of us. We often overlook the things happening in the present. Endlessly chasing the next goal in our life that we believe will satisfy, which often offers only a limited satisfaction. Like that of a sugar high experience, which always has a crash. When we crash, we just create new goal post and trap ourselves to a life of dissatisfaction. Constantly chasing the next big goal, while missing the beauty of our present moment.

We must stop this chasing that leads us to being dissatisfied, and longing for the days of old. This only enables us to keep missing the beautiful moments happening right in front of our eyes. We need to learn to treasure the now and the process towards our goals. Knowing the goal means nothing without the journey and God will always provide in the end.

So, my answer to the question, “What’s Next?” is simply to let go of the question and get lost in the process. Enabling me to get lost in the BEAUTY OF THE PRESENT. So, I will treasure the things in front of me and live a life fully satisfised. Join me and lose sight of the ever-expanding goal post.
