The Story Isn't Over

Writer's picture: Matt GeorgeMatt George

In the Gospel according to Mark, it begins with the following:

The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

I find this line interesting when we think of how most ancient authorities end the Gospel according to Mark at 16:8, which says the following after the women discovered an empty tomb and were greeted by an Angel:

So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

When we put these verses together and sit with the ancient ending to the Gospel according to Mark, we discover something transformative.

We discover a story that isn’t over or tied with a clean bow. In this ending we see an invitation to join in the story because it isn’t over. Just as the women were left amazed and terrified so are we by encountering the divine in the Gospel according to Mark. What will we do?

At first, we all leave in silence in a sense of awe-fear, but will we choose to spread the news like the women clearly did after their encounter at the tomb? Can we join in the story of the good news and play our part? Partnering with the Gospel of Jesus to have God’s kingdom of divine love reign over all the earth.

Realising the story isn’t over and we all have a special part to play.
